Turning Setbacks Into Comebacks

We’ve all been there, we hit our health and fitness goals feeling great then bam! a few months later, or Summer Vacation, we notice the healthy habits aren’t as consistent as they use to be, our pants are feeling a little tighter, and we’re feeling less energetic. Alas, we hit the comfort zone. Slowly over time we stopped checking in with ourselves during meals to see how full or hungry we are, we’ve been eating less and less veggies at each meal and our lean protein has gone MIA! What do we do now?!?!

Now is the perfect time to pat yourself on the back just for the fact that you actually noticed something was going amuck, you noticed that your body isn’t feeling as well as it did a couple of months ago, you noticed that you haven’t been as consistent as you thought you were with your habits. That my friends is a huge high five moment!! We need to learn how to point out our bright spots, instead of feeling guilty all the time. Bright spots help you focus on what you’re doing well so that you can keep repeating those moments. We do way better when we cheer ourselves on, compared to when we talk down to ourselves.

Right this moment is the perfect moment to get back to using your habits consistently, your very next meal you can choose a plate of colorful veggies, delicious lean protein, and a sprinkle of healthy fats. Then after that you can get outdoors for a nice 30 minute walk with family or friends. Whether it’s been a few months or a couple years, once you notice yourself not where you like to be just jump right back in with your healthy eating and exercise habits.

Here are my favorite daily habits:

Eat slowly to 80% full (not stuffed, but no longer feeling hungry)
Eat lean protein with every meal (1 palm size serving for women, 2 for men)
Eat colorful veggies with every meal (aim for 5 servings to start gradually getting to 10 servings a day)
Eat healthy fats with every meal (just a thumb/1T serving will do)
Exercise at least 30 minutes a day (make sure you are getting your heart rate up during those 30 minutes)
