Well, my friends, we are a month or so into the new year with bright shiny new goals to achieve!  How have you been doing with those goals?  I think the easiest part is stating what we want to accomplish, then comes the hard part…figuring out how we are going to achieve them.  With this article I will help you get pointed in the right direction!  It mostly has to do with being consistent and our behaviors.

Let’s look at outcomes and behaviors.  Outcomes are what you want, but they don’t tell you how to do it. Behaviors are how you will get there. Behavior goals give you an action plan.  An example of an outcome goal would be, “I want to run a 10 minute mile”.  An example of a behavior goal would be, “I will run for 10 minutes 3 times per week gradually increasing time and speed.”  The behavior goal has given you a lot more information on how you will achieve your goal of running a 10 minute mile.

That brings us to consistency.  In order to change your behaviors you need to be consistent with the action plan you set out for yourself.  Behavior goals are a commitment to do a specific set of actions or tasks that lead to the outcome you want.  They are the things you do consistently and regularly.  They are small, manageable tasks that you can easily control.  Behavior goals are tasks you are able to complete today.

Consistently showing up for yourself, and keeping your behaviors in check is the only way you will achieve your goals for the long run.  Your behaviors are the only thing you can control.  Sit down today to go over your goals with behaviors in mind.  What tasks, actions, and daily behaviors need to happen for you to achieve your goals?
