Getting Outside Your Comfort Zone

Stepping outside your comfort zone can be scary and uncomfortable when you really think about it, but it’s usually well worth it when you decide to take that first step. When you’re stepping outside your comfort zone you usually end up waffling between feelings of excitement and being uncomfortable. You’re really excited to try something new, but also unsure if it will be a good experience or not.

This Spring I had the chance to step out of my own comfort zone. My daughter’s dance studio happened to be offering an adult tap class, which really intrigued me, but also freaked me out! With a lot of nudging from my daughter, I finally signed up. It was a pretty big step out of my comfort zone signing up for this class. I knew I would be anxious going to that first class and meeting new people. I am an introvert 100%. I also knew I would have a tough time being okay with making mistakes, (recovering perfectionist) but I also knew I could laugh at my mistakes to keep moving forward. Honestly isn’t having fun and being able to laugh at yourself what really matters?

The class was a great experience! I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone to try something new! By putting myself into a new, unknown situation I think it helped my daughters see that it’s okay and usually fun to try something new. In fact both of my daughters signed up for tap during the summer session at the studio and have decided to sign up for the Fall session also! I’m pretty sure I will be signing up again too.

When you really sit back to think about past experiences, I’m sure you’ll come to the conclusion that most of the time it has turned out to be a good time. What can you do this month to take a step outside your comfort zone?
